The chimpanzee has three subspecies, the Eastern (shown above), Central, and West African subspecies.

Distribution:

From southern Senegal across the forested belt north of river Zaïre to western Uganda and Tanzania

Habitat:

Predominantly in rainforests and forest galleries extending into savannah woodlands, also frequenting lowland and mountain forests, showing a marked preference for mixed and colonizing communities. Social communities of 15-120 animals.

Food:

omnivorous, food highly variable according to individual population and season.

Status:

The three subspecies have different ranges and face different threats: (the Western (P.t.verus): Endangered, the Central (P.t.troglodytes): Vulnerable, and the Eastern (P.t.schweinfurthi): Vulnerable
