Despite their size, elephants seek safety in numbers as the young are especially vulnerable as prey to lions.
Elephants are extremely social, constantly caressing each other with their trunks. Long after an elephant has died, the heard may come back to the carcass and caress it as if to say goodbye.
Bull elephants, however, are known to sometimes penetrate the carcass of a female elephant. This is a sign of dominance.
