AFRICAN SAVANNA ELEPHANTS
Laxodonta africana africana
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Summer 1998
Protective of her young, this mother matriarch was sending clear signals
of warning to us.
The African Bush elephant is the largest land mammal, with bulls weighing up to 6,3 tons. Its habitat ranges from wooded savanna to semi-desert and desert. The subspecies Forest elephant is considerably smaller and lives in the central African rainforests.
Currently listed as an Endangered Species. A number of African countries, including Namibia, want to resume trade in confiscated ivory. In South Africa elephants are subject to culling, that is, their number is being kept at a constant by deliberately killing them. This is to reduce their destructive impact on areas too small for large numbers of them. Both practices arouse world-wide opposition and mixed emotions.
