Distribution: Woodlands, savannahs and grasslands of eastern and central Africa. Also in a broad belt between the Sahara desert and rainforests. Live in packs of up to 40 animals, average between 15 and 20 members. Pack hiearchy based more on age, size and individual assertiveness than on sex. Not endangered (IUCN status: not listed)
